New York Colony
Founded: 1626 by the Duke of York
James, the Duke of York received control of New Netherlands. The name was later changed to New York to honor him.

Geography:
The Middle colonies had many rivers and harbors. Near the Hudson River, there were many swamps. Up north were mountains covered with forests. The ground was rocky, fertile, and good for farming.
Government:
The colony was given to the hands of James (Duke of York), brother of King Charles the II. He appointed a governor to rule with a council of advisers also appointed by him. It wasn't until 1683 when the colony can get together and appoint laws. However, those laws can still be vetoed by the Duke of York. In 1685, James became king and New York became a royal colony.
